One Small Step!
This is what the LORD Almighty says: "These people say, 'The time has not yet come for the LORD's house to be built.' "
Haggai 1:2
There is a little word game I love to play with my grandson Jakob. I ask him why today is never called tomorrow. Today is yesterday’s tomorrow, and when tomorrow arrives it is always called today. Jakob is seven and verbally bantering back and forth is fun, but there is a deep truth here that I hope he comes to understand.
Tomorrow is the mother’s milk of procrastination. Dreaming about what you will do tomorrow while doing nothing today puts you in the “Good Intentions” Hall of Fame. While it may be true that someone was “born yesterday,” no one was ever or ever will be “born tomorrow!”
The prophet Haggai wrote a telling indictment when he quoted the Lord who said, "These people say, 'The time has not yet come for the LORD's house to be built.' "
They were busy taking care of their own business, but were ignoring the things of God. They were declaring that there would be a time in the future when they would apply themselves to His priorities. It seems that the things they wanted to accomplish for God tomorrow never found a place in the bustle of today.
When you stand before the Lord on the Day of Judgment the Bible does not say that one of His questions will be: “What thing for Me did you plan, hope or intend to do?”
The farmer who plans, hopes and intends to plant his field but never puts his hand to the plow will not reap a harvest.
Look now at your hopes, plans and intentions when it comes to the things of God. Pick one of those things and put your hand to that plow. You may not be able to do very much today, but the smallest step you take today is worth far more than the giant leap you plan for tomorrow!
