Unsinkable Life!

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.

But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."

"Come," he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"

Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"

And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

Matthew 14:22-33

If you come to Jesus while He is walking on the water then you will have to walk on water as well. It is far less threatening to join Jesus while He is teaching or even while He is doing miracles. Teaching is safe and miracles, even though they are spectacular do not put me at risk. But walking on water is a different story.

When you walk on water you give up the safety of the boat to be with Jesus. When you walk on water the greatest temptation is to look at the wind and become afraid. The storm may cause your boat to sink, but when you are walking on water only fear can put you under.

When the storm begins to rage in your life it is safer to walk on water than to stay in the boat. There is no such thing as an unsinkable boat, but there is an unsinkable life. The boat provides only limited protection from the storm, but when you walk on the water with Jesus the storm is powerless to send you to the bottom.

When you walk on water there is no scientific explaination for how you are doing it. When you walk on water there is no Plan B. Peter did not take a life preserver with him when he got out of the boat. When you walk on water the only hope you have if you begin to sink is the hand of Jesus.

The best place to be in life is where your only hope of rescue is Jesus. Of course it is best not to fear, but when you are walking on the water with Jesus His hand will always be there to lift you from the deep water.

Don't forget that if you want to walk on the water you must first get out of the boat!
