Hiding From God!

The snake was sneakier than any of the other wild animals that the Lord God had made. One day it came to the woman and asked, “Did God tell you not to eat fruit from any tree in the garden?”

The woman answered, “God said we could eat fruit from any tree in the garden, except the one in the middle. He told us not to eat fruit from that tree or even to touch it. If we do, we will die.”

“No, you won't!” the snake replied. “God understands what will happen on the day you eat fruit from that tree. You will see what you have done, and you will know the difference between right and wrong, just as God does.”

The woman stared at the fruit. It looked beautiful and tasty. She wanted the wisdom that it would give her, and she ate some of the fruit. Her husband was there with her, so she gave some to him, and he ate it too.  At once they saw what they had done, and they realized they were naked. Then they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.

Late in the afternoon, when the breeze began to blow, the man and woman heard the Lord God walking in the garden. So they hid behind some trees.

Genesis 3:1-8

The sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden gave them an immediate awareness that they were naked and they covered themselves and hid from God.

That is what men still do when they sin. Sin turns your eyes on yourself and tempts you to decide that hiding from God would be your best course of action.

I suppose that is why in the aftermath of a national scandal there is usually an attempt at a "cover-up." We still try to do what the first man and woman did after they sinned!
We also blame someone else when our sin is exposed. Adam blamed Eve and Eve blamed the snake. More than forty years ago there was a comedian named Flip Wilson who became famous for the line "The Devil made me do it."

Now here is the solution to the problem of sin. Instead of trying to hide from God and blame someone else, even the Devil for your sin, hide in the arms of Jesus because He wants to rescue you from your sin and suffer the punishment that you deserve.

Jesus came to restore you to God and reverse the impact of sin. Jesus came to give you eternal life instead of eternal death which is what you deserve because of sin!

"Lord Jesus, I confess my sin and run to Your arms instead of trying to hide from You. Hold me close to You today and everyday, and even forever! Amen."
