The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.” “Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled, he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions. When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!”
John 2:1-10 (NLT)
I have heard and then read this story all my life. The point to the story is, of course that Jesus made wine out of water! But have you ever noticed how much wine Jesus made? I am told that these six stone water jars together would hold somewhere between 120 and 180 gallons of wine. That would be the equivalent of two or three 55 gallon drums of wine! A very rough estimate of the price of that wine today would be somewhere between one and two thousand dollars.
This was not a small, insignificant or "minor" miracle. Jesus made a lot of wine for the wedding, and it was really good.
So I must ask myself this question: "Is my need too big for Jesus to provide?" And of course, the other side of that coin is this: "Is my need too small to merit the attention of God?" The answer to both of those questions is NO - your need cannot be too big and it cannot be too small!
The important thing to remember is that whatever you need, Jesus can provide! If you need a simple word of encouragement in your life today, Jesus can send someone to give it, or He can lead you to that Word in the Bible. If you have a mountain of need, never forget what Jesus said about Faith and Mountains and the Sea!
How much wine did Jesus make that day at the wedding? He made plenty and it was certainly enough. How much can Jesus do for what you need? He can do more than you need, but He will certainly do enough!
Your job is to tell Jesus about the need and then fill the jars with water!
"Lord Jesus, I know that You can make wine out of water in my life today. And so I give You all my needs and trust that You know what is best in everything. And may You be praised forever. Amen."
