Contagious Sin!

Listen to this blog.

Don’t be too quick to accept people into the service of the Lord by placing your hands on them.

Don’t sin because others do, but stay close to God.

Stop drinking only water. Take a little wine to help your stomach trouble and the other illnesses you always have.

1 Timothy 5:22-23

If you want to be ignored in a public situation, find someone who cannot be ignored and stand next to them. No one remembers the guy to stood beside the man with Green hair!

Sometimes we ignore parts of the Bible because they stand next to something very noticeable or even controversial. The phrase "don't sin because others do" is standing between a warning about laying hands on someone quickly and an encouragement to drink a little wine. So it is easy to ignore these words about the contagion of sin.

If you move from the northern part of the United States to the deep South you will have a serious accent when you speak. Southern listeners will tolerate your odd way of talking, but if you stay long enough they will convert you into a man or woman who occasionally says ya'll. Unless you make a conscious effort not to, over time you will lose most if not all of your northern accent.

Sin is like that. When we spend time with people who are sinning the temptation to join in grows and grows. Sin is contagious. It is like poison ivy. When you rub up against it you will have to deal with the consequences for quite a while, if not forever.

Frankly, when someone says "Everybody is doing it" the chances are quite high that "it" may indeed be a sin! Judge yourself by the Word of God, not by the collective morality of the world around you. Then you can be salt and light in world that desperately needs both!
